Design philosophy
The centre channel carries sixty percent of what you hear.
In a cinema system, the centre channel reproduces the majority of programme material โ dialogue, centred vocal performances, and the acoustic anchor of the soundstage. A weak centre channel is not compensated by strong left and right speakers. It degrades the entire system.
The Q4 is designed to be worthy of the Q-Series it anchors. A true 3-way architecture with one dedicated driver per frequency range โ the same Corundum dome tweeter as every Q-Series model, a dedicated 6ยฝโณ GFC midwoofer covering the vocal and instrumental band, and a dedicated 6ยฝโณ GFC woofer handling bass below it. Three drivers. Three jobs. The tonal character the listener hears from the Q1, Q2, or Q3 front channels continues through the centre without discontinuity.

Transducer platform
Three drivers. Three operating ranges. One voice.
The Q4 uses three transducers from the Peerless HDS driver family โ one dedicated driver per frequency range. The same Corundum dome tweeter as the Q1, Q2, and Q3. A 6ยฝโณ GFC midwoofer covering the vocal and upper-midrange band exclusively. A 6ยฝโณ GFC woofer handling bass below the lower crossover point. Each driver operates only within its designed range โ the 3-way topology ensures the midwoofer covering dialogue carries no bass loading, and the woofer carries no midrange content. The result is a centre channel with the separation and dynamic composure that a 2-way design cannot achieve with the same driver complement.
Tweeter โ high-frequency transducer
29mm TeXtremeยฎ dome, waveguide-loaded
The identical Corundum dome tweeter used across every Q-Series model. Corundum โ aluminium oxide โ at 9/10 on the Mohs hardness scale. Dome resonance pushed well above the audible range. Flat response to 22 kHz and beyond. FEA-optimised underhung motor, copper cap pole piece, rear acoustic chamber as resonance tuner and thermal heatsink. Shared with the Q1, Q2, and Q3 โ the high-frequency character of the Q4 is precisely matched to the front left and right speakers. Sounds panning across the front soundstage pass through the same tweeter technology in every channel.
Midwoofer โ 6ยฝโณ GFC, vocal and midrange band
6ยฝโณ Glass Fiber Composite midwoofer
A 6ยฝโณ GFC midwoofer operating exclusively in the vocal and upper-midrange band between the two crossover points โ the frequency range where dialogue intelligibility, vocal character, and the acoustic identity of instruments are defined. The Glass Fiber Composite cone combines fibreglass rigidity with controlled damping, extending clean response across the vocal band without mechanical coloration. The ferrite motor incorporates an aluminium shorting ring reducing voice coil inductance. In the Q4's 3-way architecture, this driver carries only the midrange band โ free of the bass loading that a 2-way centre channel midwoofer accumulates at cinema output levels. That separation is audible in dialogue clarity at sustained volume.
Woofer โ 6ยฝโณ GFC, bass band
6ยฝโณ Glass Fiber Composite woofer
A 6ยฝโณ GFC woofer operating exclusively below the lower crossover point โ the same driver family as the midwoofer above it, assigned to bass reproduction only. In the Q4's sealed enclosure, the woofer handles the low-frequency content of centre channel programme material โ bass-weighted dialogue, low-frequency effects that pan to centre, and the weight that gives vocal performances physical presence in the room. The sealed alignment produces a controlled, clean bass rolloff that integrates naturally with a subwoofer at 80 Hz when processor bass management is active. Free air resonance of 46 Hz, 10.68mm peak-to-peak linear excursion.
The Q4's 3-way topology means the midwoofer covering dialogue operates without bass loading โ at realistic cinema output levels, a 2-way centre channel midwoofer simultaneously handles bass and dialogue, accumulating thermal stress and dynamic compression across both. The Q4's dedicated midwoofer handles only the vocal band. The woofer handles only bass. Three drivers. Three jobs. Dialogue stays clear at volume.
Signal integration
The crossover is where the speaker is truly designed.
The Q4 crossover is a 3-way network โ three drivers, two crossover boundaries, and the phase relationships between all three maintained across the full frequency range. The woofer crosses to the midwoofer at ~400 Hz. The midwoofer crosses to the Corundum dome tweeter at ~2,000 Hz. Between those points, the dedicated midwoofer operates exclusively in the vocal and instrumental band โ carrying the programme content that defines the cinema experience without the thermal and excursion load that bass reproduction would add.
All three drivers are 8ฮฉ โ the Q4 presents a stable 8ฮฉ nominal load to the amplifier or processor throughout the frequency range. LCR impedance linearisation maintains load stability across both crossover regions. Resonance suppression networks at each driver's mechanical limit. Phase-aligned integration at both crossover boundaries. Quality film capacitors and air-core inductors throughout.

Cabinet design
Precision has a geometry.
The Q4 cabinet is V&Y's own design โ a 775mm tall, 140mm deep sealed enclosure built for vertical centre channel use. The same shallow depth as the entire Q-Series lineup โ consistent across every model, from Q1 bookshelf to Q3 tower โ so a complete Q-Series installation maintains visual coherence throughout the room.
Enclosure
Acoustic suspension โ sealed throughout
The Q4 uses a fully sealed acoustic suspension enclosure. The sealed alignment produces a controlled bass rolloff that integrates cleanly with a subwoofer's high-pass filter in a cinema system. Processor bass management at 80 Hz hands the low-frequency work to a subwoofer, allowing the Q4's woofer to focus on the upper bass register and the midwoofer to focus entirely on dialogue. No port means no port turbulence, no port noise, and no placement sensitivity near wall surfaces.
Placement
Vertical centre channel โ 775mm tall, 140mm deep
At 775mm tall and 140mm deep, the Q4 is a vertical centre channel โ not a conventional horizontal cabinet. Placed beside the screen or mounted on the wall adjacent to the display, the vertical driver array positions the Corundum dome tweeter at or near ear level for a seated listener in most room configurations. The 140mm cabinet depth is consistent with the Q-Series wall-placement standard โ the Q4 can be installed flush against a wall or on shallow wall brackets without room intrusion.

Resonance-controlled enclosure
High-density natural wood composite construction, internally braced at calculated positions to suppress panel resonance modes. Standing wave managed internal geometry. Moisture-resistant and dimensionally stable over decades of use.
Surface
Multi-stage hand-applied finish
Same finishing standard as every V&Y model. Flat-sanded between coats, inspected under raking light, cleared only when it meets our written surface specification. The Q4 is visible beside or below the screen in the primary visual focal point of the cinema room โ its finish is held to the same standard as the speakers flanking it. Available in all five V&Y finishes.

The Q4 presents a stable 8ฮฉ nominal load โ compatible with any standard AV processor or amplifier without the 4ฮฉ stability requirement of the Q3. Processor bass management should cross the Q4 at 80 Hz when used with a subwoofer โ the sealed alignment integrates cleanly at this point, allowing the midwoofer to focus on the vocal band and the woofer to handle upper bass only. The Q4 anchors the front soundstage of a Q-Series cinema system. Placed vertically beside or below the screen, it handles dialogue and centred programme content with the same Corundum dome tweeter and GFC driver character as the Q1, Q2, or Q3 flanking it. Sounds panning across the front soundstage from left to centre to right pass through speakers that share their high-frequency character. The tonal discontinuity that reveals a mismatched centre channel is absent.
