Description
Design philosophy

Every decision is acoustic.

The Q1 begins with the same question as every V&Y loudspeaker: what does this driver pair need from its cabinet, its crossover, and its alignment to perform at its absolute limit? Every dimension follows from that question. Every component value. Every surface decision.

The Q1 is built to work wherever it is placed. On stands in a dedicated listening room. Mounted on a wall in a living space where floor area is a consideration. The flat-baffle cabinet and down-firing port are designed to function in both contexts โ€” the port fires downward regardless of placement orientation, and wall boundary reinforcement supplements the bass alignment when the cabinet is wall-mounted. One speaker. Two placements. The same acoustic performance in either.
Transducer platform

Two drivers. Engineered for coherence.

The Q1 uses two transducers from the Peerless HDS driver family โ€” a high-performance platform designed for demanding multi-way loudspeaker applications. A 1ยผโ€ณ Corundum dome tweeter with a material so hard its dome resonance is pushed well beyond the audible range. A 6ยฝโ€ณ Glass Fiber Composite midwoofer with the low free air resonance and long excursion to deliver genuine bass authority in a compact reflex alignment. Two drivers chosen for acoustic coherence โ€” integrated by V&Y's crossover design into a system that is more than the sum of its parts.
Tweeter โ€” Corundum dome Shared across Q-Series

1ยผโ€ณ Corundum dome tweeter

Corundum โ€” aluminium oxide โ€” scores 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it one of the hardest materials in nature. As a tweeter dome, this extreme rigidity pushes the dome's resonance frequency well above the audible range, keeping frequency response flat to 22 kHz and beyond with negligible coloration from mechanical modes. The underhung voice coil on a vented aluminium former operates with ample linear excursion โ€” allowing crossover frequencies as low as 1,200 Hz without mechanical stress, giving V&Y's crossover significant design latitude in integrating the tweeter with the midwoofer below it. An FEA-optimised motor assembly with a thick copper cap on the pole piece reduces inductance and minimises distortion. A rear acoustic chamber serves as both a resonance tuner and a thermal heatsink, extending power handling and reducing dynamic compression at sustained output levels.

Midwoofer โ€” Glass Fiber Composite cone

6ยฝโ€ณ Glass Fiber Composite midwoofer

A 6ยฝโ€ณ midwoofer with a Glass Fiber Composite (GFC) cone โ€” a fiberglass-reinforced composite material combining the stiffness of fibreglass with controlled damping behaviour. The GFC cone resists pistonic breakup modes, extending clean midrange response toward the crossover point. The ferrite motor incorporates an aluminium shorting ring that reduces voice coil inductance โ€” extending frequency response performance and reducing second harmonic distortion through the crossover region. A cast aluminium basket provides structural rigidity and thermal management. Under-spider and vented cone neck ventilation reduce air compression effects at higher excursion levels, maintaining dynamic composure at realistic listening levels.

A free air resonance of 46 Hz and 10.68mm peak-to-peak linear excursion give this driver genuine bass authority within V&Y's reflex alignment โ€” the bass register of the Q1 is produced by a driver that is not operating near its mechanical limits at realistic output levels.

The Corundum dome tweeter's unusually low minimum crossover frequency of 1,200 Hz allows V&Y's crossover to integrate it with the 6ยฝโ€ณ GFC midwoofer at a point where both drivers are well within their natural operating range. The Corundum dome is operating far above its mechanical limit. The GFC midwoofer is operating far below its. The result is a 2-way system where the crossover transition is resolved with a margin that most 2-way designs at this price level cannot achieve.
Signal integration

The crossover is where the speaker is truly designed.

The Q1 crossover integrates the Corundum dome tweeter and 6ยฝโ€ณ GFC midwoofer at ~2,000 Hz โ€” a crossover point that keeps both drivers well within their optimal operating ranges. The Corundum tweeter's minimum crossover point of 1,200 Hz gives the network design latitude that most tweeter platforms at this price level do not provide โ€” the crossover sits well above the tweeter's mechanical limit, preserving dynamic integrity at all realistic listening levels.

Low-loss network topology with resonance suppression networks at each driver's mechanical limit. Impedance linearisation for a stable, amplifier-friendly 8 ฮฉ load across the full frequency range. Phase-aligned integration at the crossover point. The assembly uses quality film capacitors and air-core inductors โ€” the same crossover design discipline as the X-Series and R-Series, applied to the Q-Series driver platform.
Cabinet design

Built for the stand and the wall equally.

The Q1 cabinet is V&Y's own design โ€” a flat-baffle compact enclosure engineered for dual-placement use. The shallow depth and flat rear panel allow flush wall mounting on standard brackets. The down-firing port is positioned at the cabinet base so it fires downward regardless of placement orientation โ€” on a stand, on a shelf, or on a wall bracket. The down-firing port works with boundary reinforcement in wall-mounted positions rather than against it.
Baffle

Diffraction-controlled flat baffle

The flat baffle profile is shaped to minimise high-frequency edge diffraction โ€” the reflections from cabinet boundaries that broaden the acoustic image. Driver placement is calculated against the baffle geometry to displace diffraction artefacts outside the critical listening band. The flat baffle also serves the wall-mount use case: there is no projecting geometry that creates installation complexity on a bracket.

Bass loading

Down-firing reflex alignment, 43 Hz

Down-firing bass reflex port, tuned to 43 Hz. The port fires downward from the cabinet base in all installation positions. Wall-mounted, the port fires downward along the wall surface with floor and wall boundary reinforcement supplementing the alignment. The 6ยฝโ€ณ midwoofer's free air resonance of 46 Hz and generous excursion capability provide bass extension to 46 Hz (ยฑ3 dB) โ€” authoritative bass from a compact cabinet in any placement.

Wall mounting

Bracket-ready, 140mm depth profile

The Q1's cabinet depth of 140mm allows placement on standard shallow-profile wall brackets without significant room protrusion. The flat rear panel mounts directly against a bracket. Optimal wall-mount placement is at ear level for the primary listening position, angled toward the listening area. Keyhole mounts and dedicated bracket options are available.

Structural integrity

Resonance-controlled enclosure

High-density natural wood composite construction, internally braced at positions calculated to suppress panel resonance modes. Moisture-resistant and dimensionally stable over decades of use in both installation contexts.

Surface

Multi-stage hand-applied finish

Each cabinet passes through a controlled multi-stage coating process โ€” flat-sanded between coats, inspected under raking light, cleared only when it meets our written surface specification. The same finishing standard as every V&Y model. Available in all five V&Y finishes.

Placement note.

The Q1 is designed for stand mounting and wall mounting. On stands, place at ear level for the primary listening position. Wall-mounted, optimal placement is at ear level angled toward the listening area โ€” the down-firing port uses wall and floor boundary reinforcement to supplement bass output in this position. Processor bass management should cross the Q1 at 80 Hz or below when used with a subwoofer in a cinema configuration.
System context

Stereo. Cinema. Stand or wall.

The Q1 is designed as a primary stereo pair for two-channel listening, as the front left/right anchor of a Q-Series cinema system, and as a flexible speaker for rooms where wall mounting is preferable to stand placement. In a dedicated listening room, the Q1 on stands delivers a stable stereo image with the Corundum tweeter's extended resolution and the GFC midwoofer's controlled midrange. In a living room or media space, the same speaker wall-mounted maintains that performance without occupying floor area.

For full Q-Series system deployment: Q1 or Q2 front left/right, Q4 centre, Q5 or Q7 surrounds, Q6 Atmos, C-Series or D-Series subwoofer. Every Q-Series model shares the same Corundum dome tweeter for tonal consistency across the system in any room configuration.
