Design philosophy
The height channel is not a detail.
Dolby Atmos adds a dimension that conventional surround sound cannot replicate โ vertical acoustic space. Aircraft overhead, rain from above, the ceiling of a cathedral. When the height channel is reproduced by a speaker that cannot place sound accurately above the listener, that dimension collapses into a vague overhead wash. The spatial precision of the format is lost.
The X6 is designed specifically for ceiling placement in a Dolby Atmos configuration. The same shield-form cabinet as the X5, but with the driver layout inverted โ the tweeter fires downward toward the listening position when the cabinet is ceiling-mounted, delivering the high-frequency resolution and waveguide-controlled directivity that height localisation requires. The same TeXtremeยฎ driver complement as the X5. The same sealed enclosure. Oriented and optimised for the ceiling, not adapted from a speaker that wasn't.

Transducer platform
Two drivers. Inverted. Intentional.
The X6 uses the same two transducers from the SATORI reference driver family as the X5 โ the waveguide-loaded TW29TXNWG-4 tweeter and the MW16TX-4 TeXtremeยฎ midwoofer. The difference is orientation. In the X6, the drivers are positioned with the midwoofer above and the tweeter below โ which, when the cabinet is ceiling-mounted, places the tweeter in the correct downward-firing position directly facing the listening area. This is not a cosmetic distinction. Tweeter placement relative to the listening axis determines high-frequency response and imaging precision at the listening position. The X6 is built for the ceiling.

29mm TeXtremeยฎ dome, waveguide-loaded
The same waveguide-loaded tweeter used across the entire X-Series. Positioned in the lower half of the X6 cabinet โ downward-facing when ceiling-mounted โ the waveguide controls dispersion toward the listening area with the same precision as in the X5 surround and X1 front channel. Height localisation in Atmos content depends on high-frequency directional cues. The TW29TXNWG-4, correctly oriented, delivers those cues accurately.
Midwoofer โ upper position Shared with X1, X5
6ยฝโณ TeXtremeยฎ cone, sealed
The same MW16TX-4 midwoofer as the X5, positioned in the upper half of the cabinet โ rearward-facing relative to the listening position when ceiling-mounted, providing the lower midrange and bass output that gives Atmos height content its weight and presence. The sealed enclosure maintains the same clean sealed-alignment characteristics as the X5, with wall and ceiling boundary reinforcement supplementing the sealed alignment's bass output in a flush or near-flush ceiling installation.
TeXtremeยฎ
The X6 shares its driver complement with the X5 surround speaker โ same tweeter, same midwoofer, same TeXtremeยฎ material. The tonal character the listener hears from the surround field continues into the height channel without discontinuity. In a complete X-Series Atmos system, every speaker from the front channels to the ceiling uses the same driver platform. That is the standard the X6 holds.
Signal integration
The crossover is where the speaker is truly designed.
The X6 crossover shares the same topology and ~2,200 Hz crossover frequency as the X5 โ LCR impedance linearisation, resonance suppression, and phase-aligned integration between tweeter and midwoofer. Developed around the waveguide-loaded TW29TXNWG-4 in its ceiling-mounted, downward-firing orientation.
In a ceiling-mounted application, the crossover's off-axis performance carries additional importance. The listener is never on the direct axis of a ceiling speaker โ they are always at an angle below it. The X6's waveguide tweeter and LCR network maintain consistent frequency response across the range of downward angles that a ceiling-mounted speaker serves, ensuring that height localisation cues arrive at the listening position with the resolution the Atmos format requires.

Cabinet design
Built for the ceiling.
The X6 uses the same shield-form cabinet geometry as the X5 โ V&Y's own design, with the curved profile that minimises baffle edge diffraction in a compact enclosure. The critical difference is the driver layout: inverted relative to the X5, so that the tweeter is positioned correctly for ceiling-mounted, downward-firing operation. The cabinet rear is flat and ceiling-bracket-ready.
Cabinet geometry
Shield-form โ shared with X5, inverted
The same curved, shield-shaped cabinet profile as the X5 โ diffraction-optimised geometry in a compact footprint. Identical in form, different in orientation and driver layout. The visual coherence between X5 and X6 on the walls and ceiling of a cinema room is intentional โ the X-Series surround and height speakers read as a matched system.
Mounting
Ceiling-mountable, bracket-compatible
The X6 is designed for ceiling mounting as its primary use case โ either surface-mounted on a ceiling bracket or semi-recessed where the ceiling construction permits. Optimal placement follows Dolby Atmos guidelines: front height speakers at approximately 30โ55ยฐ above the listening position, rear height speakers symmetrically behind. Angled ceiling brackets are available to achieve the correct downward-firing angle where the ceiling surface is horizontal.
Enclosure
Sealed โ ceiling-boundary reinforced
Acoustic suspension sealed enclosure โ the same alignment as the X5. In a ceiling installation, the boundary reinforcement from the ceiling surface supplements the sealed alignment's bass output, extending perceived low-frequency response without a port. The clean sealed rolloff integrates naturally with processor bass management at 80โ100 Hz.
Surface
Multi-stage hand-applied finish
Same finishing standard as every X-Series model. The X6 is visible on the ceiling of a dedicated cinema room โ its finish is chosen and applied to that standard, not reduced because it is overhead.

Installation note.
The X6 is designed for ceiling mounting with the flat rear panel against the ceiling surface. The tweeter faces downward toward the listening position in this orientation. Where the ceiling is horizontal and the listening area requires an angled downward projection, an angled ceiling bracket is recommended. Processor bass management should cross the X6 at 80โ100 Hz when used with a subwoofer. Dolby Atmos placement guidelines recommend front height speakers at 30โ55ยฐ above the listening position and rear height speakers symmetrically positioned behind.
