Description
Design philosophy

The centre channel carries sixty percent of what you hear.

In a cinema system, the centre channel reproduces the majority of the programme material โ€” dialogue, centred vocal performances, and the acoustic anchor of the soundstage. A weak centre channel is not compensated by strong left/right speakers. It degrades the entire system.

The X4 is designed to be worthy of the X-Series it anchors. A dedicated 3-way architecture with a sealed midrange chamber, dual 5โ€ณ TeXtremeยฎ midrange drivers operating within a tightly controlled frequency band, and the same waveguide-loaded tweeter used throughout the X-Series. The result is a centre channel that reproduces dialogue with the clarity, resolution, and tonal character of the floorstanding speakers flanking it โ€” not a compromise speaker designed around cabinet width constraints.
Transducer platform

Five drivers. One material. System coherence.

The X4 uses five transducers from the SATORI reference driver family โ€” all using TeXtremeยฎ as their sole diaphragm material. A centre tweeter shared with every X-Series model. Two dedicated 5โ€ณ TeXtremeยฎ midrange drivers in a sealed chamber flanking the tweeter. Two 6ยฝโ€ณ TeXtremeยฎ woofers at each end handling bass. The same material signature throughout the X-Series, in every channel.
Tweeter โ€” high-frequency transducer
Shared across X-Series

29mm TeXtremeยฎ dome, waveguide-loaded

The identical tweeter used in every X-Series model โ€” X1 through X7. Centred on the X4 baffle for symmetrical horizontal dispersion. The waveguide-loaded TW29TXNWG-4 ensures that the X4's high-frequency character is precisely matched to the X1, X2, or X3 it sits between โ€” the listener hears one continuous tonal signature across the front soundstage, not three separately voiced speakers.

Midrange โ€” dual driver, sealed chamber
X4 specific

2ร— 5โ€ณ TeXtremeยฎ dedicated midrange

Two SATORI MR13TX-4 dedicated midrange drivers โ€” designed specifically for the 200 Hzโ€“2,800 Hz band, not midwoofers adapted for midrange duty. The TeXtremeยฎ cone's breakup mode sits at 5.7 kHz, well above the crossover point, ensuring pure pistonic motion throughout the working band. Both drivers are crossed below the frequency at which their horizontal spacing introduces interference โ€” at which point the combined output behaves as a single radiating source with double the cone area, 6 dB higher sensitivity, and half the excursion demand on each cone.

Woofers โ€” dual bass drivers
Flanking configuration

2ร— 6ยฝโ€ณ TeXtremeยฎ cone, bass-reflex

Two SATORI MW16TX-4 midwoofers โ€” the same driver used in the X1 and X2 โ€” flanking the midrange array in a symmetrical layout. Operating below ~450 Hz in a bass-reflex enclosure tuned to 36 Hz, they provide the low-frequency foundation that allows the dedicated midrange drivers to focus entirely on the vocal and upper-midrange band. The symmetrical placement ensures equal bass loading across the width of the cabinet.

TeXtremeยฎ

All five drivers in the X4 use TeXtremeยฎ as their sole diaphragm material. The tonal coherence between the X4 centre channel and the X1, X2, or X3 flanking speakers is not a coincidence โ€” it is a direct consequence of using the same material platform, the same tweeter, and the same crossover design discipline across every model in the X-Series.

Signal integration

The crossover is where the speaker is truly designed.

The X4 crossover is a 3-way network managing four transition boundaries โ€” woofer pair to midrange pair at ~450 Hz, and midrange pair to tweeter at ~2,800 Hz. The dual midrange driver configuration requires the network to account for the combined impedance and sensitivity of both drivers operating in parallel, and to cross them below the frequency at which their horizontal spacing would introduce interference into the listening area. Above the bass crossover point and below the tweeter crossover point, the dual midrange array operates as a single coherent source with increased sensitivity and reduced excursion demand.

LCR impedance linearisation networks stabilise the load across both transition regions. Resonance suppression at each driver's breakup frequency prevents those modes from reaching the listening position. The crossover assembly is housed in its own isolated chamber within the cabinet.
Cabinet design

Precision has a geometry.

The X4 cabinet is V&Y's own design โ€” a horizontal enclosure engineered around the acoustic requirements of a 3-way centre channel with separate midrange and bass volumes. The sealed midrange chamber is fully isolated from the woofer enclosure. The crossover assembly occupies its own sealed cavity. Three acoustic environments within one cabinet, with no leakage between them.
Acoustic architecture

Sealed midrange chamber

The dual midrange drivers operate in a sealed chamber completely isolated from the woofer enclosure. Bass-frequency pressure variations from the woofer volume do not reach the rear of the midrange cones โ€” eliminating the primary source of midrange coloration in non-isolated horizontal centre channel designs.

Bass loading

Side-firing reflex alignment, 36 Hz

Side-firing bass reflex port, tuned to 36 Hz. On a centre channel positioned below a screen or on a rack shelf, a side-firing port keeps turbulence noise away from reflective surfaces directly below the cabinet โ€” preserving bass clarity at the listening position. The dual MW16TX-4 woofers in this alignment provide the low-frequency extension a centre channel needs for cinematic impact without a subwoofer crossover artefact in the critical vocal range.

Surface

Multi-stage hand-applied finish

Same finishing standard as every X-Series model. Flat-sanded between coats, inspected under raking light, cleared only when it meets our written surface specification. The X4 is designed to be placed below a screen or on a rack โ€” its finish should be as considered as the speakers flanking it.

System pairing note.

The X4 is designed as part of the X-Series system โ€” matched to the X1, X2, or X3 in tonal character through shared tweeter, shared driver material, and consistent crossover design discipline. Processor bass management should cross the X4 at 80 Hz or below when used with a subwoofer, allowing the dedicated midrange chamber to operate entirely within its optimal band. Our team can advise on processor settings for specific room configurations.
System context

The acoustic centre of the X-Series system.

The X4 is designed to anchor the front soundstage of an X-Series cinema system. Placed below a screen or in a rack position, it handles the dialogue and centred programme content that defines the cinema experience. The shared tweeter and driver material with the X1, X2, and X3 ensures that sounds crossing the front soundstage โ€” from left speaker through centre to right โ€” do so without the tonal discontinuity that reveals a mismatched centre channel.

For full X-Series deployment: X1 or X2 or X3 as front left/right, X4 centre, X5 or X7 surrounds, X6 Atmos, C-Series or D-Series subwoofer. One system. One material. One voice.

The X-Series

A complete acoustic platform.

The X4 is one component of a complete system architecture. Every X-Series model shares the same TeXtremeยฎ tweeter, the same driver material platform, and the same crossover design discipline. The X4 does not add a centre channel to an X-Series system. It completes one.
