Description
Design philosophy

Every decision is acoustic.

The X2 is the X-Series at full scale. Where the X1 resolves a single driver pair into a compact system, the X2 takes that discipline further โ€” three transducers, a 2ยฝ-way topology, and a cabinet tall enough to move real air without mechanical compromise.

The question is the same: what does this driver configuration need from its cabinet, its crossover network, and its port geometry to perform at its absolute limit? Every dimension follows from that question. Every component value. Every surface decision. The result is a floorstanding loudspeaker with the tonal coherence of the X1 and the dynamic authority that only a full-height cabinet can provide.

Transducer platform

One material. Two transducers. Total coherence.

The X2 uses three transducers from the SATORI reference driver family, all using TeXtremeยฎ as their sole diaphragm material. A single waveguide-loaded dome tweeter handles high frequencies. Two 6ยฝโ€ณ TeXtremeยฎ midwoofers operate in a 2ยฝ-way configuration โ€” one covering the full midrange and bass range, the second crossing out below the midrange to extend bass output and reduce distortion at elevated output levels. The result is a system with the midrange resolution of a dedicated monitor and the low-frequency authority of a full-range floorstander.
Tweeter โ€” high-frequency transducer

29mm TeXtremeยฎ dome, waveguide-loaded

Identical to the X1's high-frequency transducer โ€” a spread-tow carbon composite dome with dual copper cap neodymium motor and integrated cast aluminum waveguide. Shared across the X-Series to ensure tonal consistency when the X2 is deployed in a multi-channel system alongside X1, X4, X5, or X6.

Midwoofer

2ร— 6ยฝโ€ณ TeXtremeยฎ cone, long-excursion

Two matched 6ยฝโ€ณ SATORI TeXtremeยฎ midwoofers in a 2ยฝ-way configuration. The upper driver operates full-range from bass through midrange, crossing to the tweeter at the ~2,200 Hz point. The lower driver is crossed out below the midrange โ€” contributing only to bass output โ€” which reduces the distortion, compression, and thermal load on the upper driver at high output levels. The combined cone area of two 6ยฝโ€ณ drivers moves substantially more air than a single equivalent, extending low-frequency output and reducing group delay at the bass alignment frequency. Both drivers are operated within their linear excursion range at all times.

TeXtremeยฎ

TeXtremeยฎ is a spread-tow carbon fiber material developed for aerospace and Formula 1 applications. Where conventional woven carbon creates undulation as fibres cross โ€” introducing resonance modes โ€” spread-tow weave flattens each tow into a thin tape before weaving, virtually eliminating undulation. The result is a stiffer, lighter diaphragm with a higher pistonic operating range and lower distortion at breakup. All three drivers in the X2 use TeXtremeยฎ as their sole diaphragm material โ€” a choice that gives the system a coherent tonal signature from deep bass to the upper treble.
Signal integration

The crossover is where the speaker is truly designed.

The X2 crossover is a 2ยฝ-way network โ€” more complex than the X1's 2-way topology, and more demanding to resolve correctly. Three drivers, two crossover points, and a shared ground topology require the network to manage not only frequency response but the phase relationships between all three drivers at every frequency in the operating band.

The waveguide-loaded TW29 tweeter crosses at ~2,200 Hz โ€” the same point as the X1, ensuring consistent imaging behaviour across the X-Series. The lower midwoofer is crossed out at approximately 300โ€“400 Hz, where its contribution to midrange output ends and its role as a dedicated bass driver begins. LCR impedance linearisation networks stabilise the load across both crossover regions. Resonance suppression networks at each driver's mechanical breakup frequency prevent those modes from reaching the listening position.

The crossover assembly is housed in its own sealed chamber within the cabinet base โ€” isolated from the acoustic volume of the main enclosure to prevent vibration-induced component modulation.
Cabinet design

Precision has a geometry.

The X2 cabinet is V&Y's own design. At full floorstanding height, the engineering decisions are more consequential than in a compact cabinet โ€” internal standing waves develop at lower frequencies, panel resonance modes are harder to control, and the crossover chamber must be isolated from the main acoustic volume without compromising the cabinet's structural integrity. Every dimension is derived from the acoustic requirements of this specific driver configuration.
Baffle

Faceted, diffraction-controlled baffle

The baffle profile is faceted โ€” angled surfaces reduce high-frequency diffraction at the cabinet edges, preserving imaging precision and tonal balance at the listening position. Driver placement is calculated against the baffle geometry to displace diffraction artefacts outside the critical listening band. The 7ยฐ cabinet rake provides natural time alignment between the tweeter and midwoofer planes without acoustic correction in the crossover.

Bass loading

Tuned reflex alignment

Bass reflex port tuned to 35.5 Hz. The combined output of two 6ยฝโ€ณ midwoofers in a full-height cabinet achieves genuine bass authority without the port turbulence or group delay that afflicts smaller ported designs at equivalent output levels. Internal port geometry is developed to minimise flow noise across the X2's full dynamic range.

Down-firing bass reflex port, tuned to 35.5 Hz. Port placement at the cabinet base uses floor boundary reinforcement to extend low-frequency loading, and keeps port turbulence away from the primary listening axis.

Crossover isolation

Sealed crossover chamber

The crossover network is housed in a sealed chamber at the cabinet base, separated from the main acoustic volume by a slanted divider that prevents standing wave formation in the crossover cavity. Component values remain stable under the mechanical stress of high output levels. The crossover does not hear the speaker โ€” which is the point.

Structural integrity

Resonance-controlled enclosure

High-density natural wood composite construction, internally braced at calculated positions to suppress the primary panel resonance modes of a full-height cabinet. Moisture-resistant and dimensionally stable โ€” the acoustic geometry is maintained over decades of use, not just years.

Surface

Multi-stage hand-applied finish

Each cabinet passes through the same multi-stage finishing process as every V&Y model. Coats are flat-sanded between applications and inspected under raking light. The cabinet leaves our facility only when it meets our written surface specification.

Amplifier pairing.

At 88 dB sensitivity and 4 ฮฉ nominal impedance, the X2 rewards a capable solid-state amplifier with stable current delivery into low-impedance loads. The 2ยฝ-way topology presents a complex load across the bass region โ€” amplifiers with a damping factor above 100 are recommended for optimal bass control. Our team is available to advise on specific pairings before purchase.
System context

Stereo. Cinema. Resolved equally.

The X2 is designed as the primary loudspeaker for rooms where the X1's compact form is not the right answer โ€” larger listening spaces, dedicated home cinema environments, and systems where full-range bass reproduction without a subwoofer is the goal. Its 2ยฝ-way topology and full-height cabinet deliver the scale that a stand-mount cannot.

As a stereo pair, the X2 produces a soundstage with the stability and depth of the X1 and the dynamic headroom that a floorstander can uniquely provide. In a cinema system, it serves as the front left/right anchor with sufficient output to be used without a subwoofer in most rooms โ€” or to cross seamlessly to a C-Series or D-Series subwoofer where additional extension is required.

The X2 shares the same tweeter as the X1, X4, X5, X6, and X7 โ€” ensuring tonal consistency across any X-Series configuration.

The X-Series

A complete acoustic platform.

The X2 is the floorstanding expression of the same system architecture that begins with the X1. Every X-Series model shares the same TeXtremeยฎ tweeter, the same cabinet finishing standard, and the same crossover design discipline. The acoustic character of the X2 is present throughout the system โ€” from the front left/right pair to the last Atmos speaker in the ceiling.
