Compact Surround Loudspeaker

The R-Series. Anywhere.

R7 Surround Speaker

A compact flat-profile surround speaker built around the same beryllium dome tweeter and Egyptian Papyrus cone midwoofer as the R5 โ€” in a low-profile wall-mount cabinet designed for rooms where the surround speaker should disappear into the architecture rather than define it. The same drivers. The same crossover. The same sealed enclosure. A different relationship with the room.

Description
Design philosophy

The speaker that disappears. The sound that doesn't.

Not every listening room is a dedicated cinema. Some rooms are also living spaces โ€” environments where the visual presence of a surround speaker is a consideration as real as its acoustic performance. The R5's shield form makes a considered statement on the wall. The R7 makes none.

A flat-profile wall-mount cabinet with the same beryllium tweeter and Egyptian Papyrus midwoofer as the R5. The same crossover topology. The same sealed alignment. The same acoustic performance. The cabinet recedes into the architecture. What the room sees is the beryllium dome and Papyrus cone on a flat baffle โ€” the R-Series material identity, in the most discreet possible form.

The surround field it produces is the R-Series. The footprint it leaves in the room is not.
Transducer platform

Identical drivers. Different cabinet.

The R7 uses the same two transducers from the SATORI reference driver family as the R5 โ€” the waveguide-loaded beryllium dome tweeter and the Egyptian Papyrus cone midwoofer. The driver complement is unchanged. The crossover frequency is unchanged. The sealed alignment is unchanged. What changes is the cabinet geometry โ€” from the R5's distinctive shield form to the R7's flat-profile rectangular enclosure. The R-Series acoustic performance is consistent across both. The installation character is not.
Tweeter โ€” beryllium dome, waveguide-loaded Shared across R-Series

29mm beryllium dome โ€” waveguide-loaded

The identical beryllium tweeter used across every R-Series model. In the R7's flat-baffle cabinet, the waveguide's controlled directivity maintains consistent frequency response across the range of off-axis listening angles that wall-mounted surround placement demands โ€” every seat in the room hears the same beryllium character from the R7 as from the R-Series front channels. Beryllium extending flat to 40 kHz. 170mm solid aluminum waveguide. Dual copper caps at 0.02 mH voice coil inductance.

Midwoofer โ€” Egyptian Papyrus cone Shared with R1, R5

6ยฝโ€ณ Egyptian Papyrus cone midwoofer

The same Egyptian Papyrus cone midwoofer as the R1 and R5. A cellulose-based natural material made from the pith of the Cyperus papyrus plant โ€” chosen for high internal damping, natural self-damping, and the organic tonal warmth that defines the R-Series midrange character. In the R7's flat rectangular enclosure, the driver operates within the same acoustic volume as the R5, with wall boundary reinforcement supplementing the sealed alignment's bass output. The Papyrus warmth the listener hears from the R-Series front channels is present in the surround field, from a speaker the room barely registers.

Beryllium & Egyptian Papyrus

The R7 holds the same driver standard as the R5. The choice between them is architectural โ€” not acoustic. A buyer who chooses the R7 for its discreet profile receives the same beryllium precision and Papyrus warmth as the R5. The R-Series is uncompromised in either cabinet. The decision is how visible the speaker should be in the room.
Signal integration

The crossover is where the speaker is truly designed.

The R7 crossover is identical in topology and crossover frequency to the R5 โ€” developed around the waveguide-loaded beryllium tweeter, with a precision attenuation network maintaining tonal balance across the sensitivity differential between the beryllium dome and Papyrus midwoofer. LCR impedance linearisation across the full frequency range. Resonance suppression networks at each driver's mechanical limit. Phase-aligned integration at the ~2,500 Hz crossover point.

The flat-baffle cabinet geometry produces more predictable, lower-amplitude edge diffraction than the R5's curved profile โ€” acoustically a simpler environment for the crossover network to resolve. The R7's flat baffle is not a compromise. It is a different acoustic condition, and the crossover is designed for it.
Cabinet design

Flat. Intentional. Present only in sound.

The R7 cabinet is V&Y's own design โ€” a flat-profile rectangular enclosure engineered for flush wall mounting. Where the R5's shield form is architecturally expressive, the R7 is architecturally neutral. Its shallow depth, clean rectangular profile, and flat rear panel are designed for rooms where the surround speaker integrates with the wall surface rather than projecting from it.
Form factor

Flat-profile rectangular enclosure

A clean rectangular cabinet with minimal depth โ€” the R7's profile against the wall is defined by its shallow cabinet depth alone. Installed on a standard wall-mount bracket, the R7 protrudes minimally from the wall surface. The driver face โ€” beryllium dome and Papyrus cone on a flat baffle โ€” is what the room sees. The cabinet is not part of the visual experience. The beryllium and Papyrus are.

Mounting

Wall-mountable, flexible orientation

Designed for wall mounting in any surround position โ€” side surrounds, rear surrounds, or flexible placement depending on room geometry. The flat rectangular cabinet can be oriented vertically or horizontally to suit installation requirements. Keyhole mounts and dedicated wall-bracket options are available. Optimal placement follows the same guidance as the R5: at or slightly above ear level for side surrounds, behind and above the listening position for rear surrounds.

Enclosure

Sealed โ€” same volume as R5, boundary-reinforced

Acoustic suspension sealed enclosure in the same internal volume as the R5. In flush or near-flush wall mounting, boundary reinforcement from the wall supplements the sealed alignment's bass output โ€” the R7's flat profile and flush placement work with the acoustic environment. The clean sealed rolloff integrates naturally with processor bass management at 80โ€“100 Hz.

Surface

Multi-stage hand-applied finish

Same finishing standard as every V&Y model. On a flat cabinet the finish quality is more exposed โ€” there are no curves to soften imperfections. The R7 meets the same written surface specification as the R1, R2, and R3. Available in all five V&Y finishes.

System pairing note.

The R7 performs identically to the R5 in acoustic terms โ€” same drivers, same crossover, same sealed alignment in the same acoustic volume. The choice between R5 and R7 is purely architectural: the R5 for rooms where the surround speaker is part of the visual design, the R7 for rooms where it should not be. Processor bass management should cross the R7 at 80โ€“100 Hz when used with a subwoofer.
System context

Every position. Every room.

The R7 is designed for flexible deployment across any surround position in an R-Series cinema system โ€” side surrounds, rear surrounds in a 7.1 or 7.1.4 Atmos layout, or mixed configurations where the R5 occupies side surround positions and the R7 handles rear surrounds. Both speakers share the same driver complement and tonal character, so mixed deployment is acoustically seamless.

The R7 also serves as the surround choice in rooms where the R5's shield form is not appropriate โ€” living spaces, bedrooms, or installations with strict architectural requirements. The acoustic result is the same. The room registers the difference. The listener should not.

Full R-Series deployment options: R1/R2/R3 front, R4 centre, R5 side surrounds, R7 rear surrounds, R6 Atmos height, C-Series or D-Series subwoofer.
R5 or R7

Same sound. Different relationship with the room.

The R5 and R7 use identical drivers, identical crossovers, and identical sealed alignments. The acoustic performance is the same. The decision between them is architectural.
Form factor

Choose the R5 when โ€”

The room is a dedicated cinema or listening space where the speaker's visual presence is part of the design. The shield form is a considered object on the wall โ€” visible and intentional. A speaker that belongs in the room as a presence, not just as a source of sound.

Mounting

Choose the R7 when โ€”

The room is a dual-purpose space where the surround speaker should recede. The flat rectangular cabinet installs flush against the wall, protrudes minimally, and allows the architecture of the room to remain primary. The beryllium and Papyrus are present in the sound. The cabinet is not present in the room.

NOTE: Both models are available in all five V&Y finishes. Both carry the same 60-day home trial and 10-year warranty. Our team can advise on which model suits your specific room and installation requirements before purchase.
