Atmos Height Loudspeaker

Sound from above. The R-Series character, correctly placed.

R6 Atmos Speaker

A compact 2-way Atmos height speaker built for ceiling mounting โ€” the same beryllium dome tweeter and Egyptian Papyrus cone midwoofer as the R1 and R5, in a purpose-designed shield-form cabinet with an inverted driver layout that places the beryllium tweeter in the correct downward-firing orientation for ceiling installation. The R-Series acoustic character, from above.

Description
Design philosophy

The height channel is not a detail.

Dolby Atmos adds a dimension that conventional surround sound cannot replicate โ€” vertical acoustic space. The height channel carries the overhead information that makes immersive cinema credible: aircraft above, rain from the ceiling, the spatial signature of a concert hall. When that information is reproduced by a speaker that cannot resolve it accurately, the vertical dimension collapses into a vague impression rather than a spatial reality.

The R6 is designed specifically for ceiling placement in a Dolby Atmos configuration. The same shield-form cabinet as the R5, with the driver layout inverted โ€” the beryllium tweeter fires downward toward the listening position when the cabinet is ceiling-mounted, delivering the high-frequency resolution and waveguide-controlled directivity that height localisation requires. The same beryllium dome and Papyrus midwoofer as the R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5. The R-Series acoustic character reaches the listener from above with the same precision it arrives from in front of them and beside them.
Transducer platform

Two drivers. Inverted. Intentional.

The R6 uses the same two transducers from the SATORI reference driver family as the R1 and R5 โ€” the waveguide-loaded beryllium dome tweeter and the Egyptian Papyrus cone midwoofer. The driver complement is unchanged from the R-Series bookshelf and surround speakers. The orientation is not. In the R6, the beryllium tweeter is positioned in the lower half of the cabinet โ€” downward-facing when ceiling-mounted โ€” and the Papyrus midwoofer occupies the upper position. This is the correct orientation for ceiling installation. Height localisation depends on high-frequency directional cues arriving from above. The beryllium tweeter, correctly positioned, delivers those cues.
Tweeter โ€” beryllium dome, downward-firing when ceiling-mounted Shared across R-Series

29mm beryllium dome โ€” waveguide-loaded, downward-facing

The same waveguide-loaded beryllium tweeter used across every R-Series model โ€” positioned in the lower half of the R6 cabinet so that it fires directly toward the listening position when the speaker is ceiling-mounted. Beryllium extending flat to 40 kHz. The 170mm solid aluminum waveguide controls dispersion toward the listening area across the range of downward angles that ceiling placement creates. Height localisation in Atmos content depends on high-frequency resolution arriving from above. The beryllium dome, correctly oriented, provides that resolution.

Midwoofer โ€” Egyptian Papyrus cone, upper position Shared with R1, R5

6ยฝโ€ณ Egyptian Papyrus cone midwoofer

The same Egyptian Papyrus cone midwoofer as the R1 and R5 โ€” positioned in the upper half of the R6 cabinet. When ceiling-mounted, the Papyrus midwoofer provides the lower midrange and bass output that gives Atmos height content its weight and presence, with the same organic warmth and natural texture that defines the R-Series character throughout the frequency range. The sealed enclosure and ceiling boundary reinforcement extend bass output in a flush or near-flush installation without a port.

Egyptian Papyrus & Beryllium

The R6 shares its driver complement with the R5 surround speaker โ€” the same beryllium tweeter, the same Papyrus midwoofer. The tonal character the listener hears from the surround field continues into the height channel without discontinuity. In a complete R-Series Atmos system, every speaker from the front channels to the ceiling uses the same driver materials. Beryllium precision and Papyrus warmth โ€” present at every height and from every direction.
Signal integration

The crossover is where the speaker is truly designed.

The R6 crossover shares the same topology and ~2,500 Hz crossover frequency as the R1 and R5 โ€” developed around the waveguide-loaded beryllium tweeter in its ceiling-mounted, downward-firing orientation. A precision attenuation network maintains tonal balance across the sensitivity differential between the beryllium dome and Papyrus midwoofer. LCR impedance linearisation across the full frequency range. Resonance suppression networks at each driver's mechanical limit. Phase-aligned integration at the crossover point.

In a ceiling-mounted application, the listener is always at an angle below the speaker โ€” never on its direct axis. The R6's waveguide tweeter and LCR network maintain consistent tonal character across the range of downward angles that ceiling placement creates, ensuring that the height channel arrives at the listening position with the resolution and warmth that define the R-Series throughout the system.
Cabinet design

Built for the ceiling.

The R6 uses the same shield-form cabinet geometry as the R5 โ€” V&Y's own design, with a curved profile that minimises baffle edge diffraction in a compact enclosure and a flat rear panel for wall or ceiling mounting. The driver layout is inverted relative to the R5: the beryllium tweeter is positioned in the lower half of the cabinet so that it fires directly toward the listening position when ceiling-mounted. The same form. The correct orientation for the ceiling.
Cabinet geometry

Shield-form โ€” shared with R5, inverted

The same curved shield-form profile as the R5 โ€” diffraction-optimised geometry in a compact footprint. Identical in form, different in driver orientation. The visual coherence between the R5 and R6 on the walls and ceiling of a cinema room communicates a designed system โ€” the R-Series surround and height speakers read as one platform, in two positions.

Mounting

Ceiling-mountable, bracket-compatible

Designed for ceiling mounting as its primary use case โ€” surface-mounted on a ceiling bracket or semi-recessed where the ceiling construction permits. The beryllium tweeter faces the listening position in this orientation. Optimal placement follows Dolby Atmos guidelines: front height speakers at approximately 30โ€“55ยฐ above the listening position, rear height speakers symmetrically behind. Angled ceiling brackets are available where the ceiling surface is horizontal and requires downward projection correction.

Enclosure

Sealed โ€” ceiling-boundary reinforced

Acoustic suspension sealed enclosure โ€” the same alignment as the R5. In ceiling installation, the ceiling boundary supplements the sealed alignment's bass output, extending low-frequency presence without a port. The clean sealed rolloff integrates naturally with processor bass management at 80โ€“100 Hz. The R-Series Atmos height channel carries weight and presence โ€” not just high-frequency spatial cues.

Surface

Multi-stage hand-applied finish

Same finishing standard as every V&Y model. The R6 is visible on the ceiling of a dedicated cinema room, beside the R5 on the walls. Its finish is held to the same standard as the rest of the system. Available in all five V&Y finishes.

Installation note.

The R6 is designed for ceiling mounting with the flat rear panel against the ceiling surface. The beryllium tweeter faces downward toward the listening position in this orientation. Where the ceiling is horizontal and the listening area requires a specific downward angle, an angled ceiling bracket is recommended. Processor bass management should cross the R6 at 80โ€“100 Hz when used with a subwoofer. Dolby Atmos placement guidelines recommend front height speakers at 30โ€“55ยฐ above the listening position and rear height speakers symmetrically positioned behind.
System context

The R-Series, above you.

The R6 completes the vertical dimension of an R-Series Atmos system. The R1, R2, or R3 anchors the front soundstage with beryllium precision and Papyrus warmth. The R5 envelops the listener from the sides with the same acoustic character. The R6 closes the acoustic sphere from above โ€” delivering the height channel with the same materials, the same crossover discipline, and the same tonal identity as every other speaker in the system.

For complete R-Series Atmos deployment: R1/R2/R3 front left/right, R4 centre, R5 side surrounds, R6 height channels (front and rear pairs for full Atmos), C-Series or D-Series subwoofer. One material platform. One acoustic identity. From the floor to the ceiling.
