Beryllium precision. Papyrus character. Reference resolution.

R1 Bookshelf Speaker

A 2-way stand-mount built around a beryllium dome tweeter and an Egyptian Papyrus cone midwoofer. Two materials with fundamentally different acoustic characters โ€” integrated through a crossover designed to make that difference disappear at the listening position. The R-Series is V&Y’s beryllium platform. A distinct acoustic identity, built from distinct materials.

Description
Design philosophy

Every decision is acoustic.

The R1 begins with the same question as every V&Y loudspeaker: what does this driver pair need from its cabinet, its crossover, and its alignment to perform at its absolute limit? Every dimension follows from that question. Every component value. Every surface decision.

Beryllium for the high frequencies. Egyptian Papyrus for the midrange and bass. Each material chosen because it is the right material for its operating range โ€” and the result is a speaker with a tonal character that is distinctly its own. Open and extended in the treble. Warm and organically textured in the midrange. Coherent throughout. This is the R-Series.
Transducer platform

Beryllium above. Papyrus below. Coherent throughout.

The R1 uses two transducers from the SATORI reference driver family โ€” chosen because their material properties and acoustic behaviour demanded the least compromise in designing this system. A 29mm beryllium dome tweeter with an integrated solid aluminum waveguide. A 6ยฝโ€ณ Egyptian Papyrus cone midwoofer, made from cellulose pulped from the Papyrus plant. Two materials. One system.
Tweeter โ€” beryllium dome, waveguide-loaded Shared across R-Series

29mm beryllium dome โ€” waveguide-loaded

Beryllium is chosen for its acoustic properties โ€” a stiffness-to-density ratio nine times greater than titanium, near-zero internal damping, and a breakup mode above 25 kHz that places the driver's mechanical limit far beyond the audible range. The dome operates in pure pistonic motion across every frequency a listener will ever hear, extending flat to 40 kHz with a responsiveness that resolves the finest micro-dynamic detail in recorded music.

The 170mm solid aluminum waveguide controls directivity above the crossover point, ensuring consistent power response throughout the listening room. Dual balanced compression chambers maintain dynamic integrity under load. Dual copper caps hold voice coil inductance to 0.02 mH across the entire operating band โ€” near-zero variation from the lowest crossover frequency to the highest audible limit.

Midwoofer โ€” Egyptian Papyrus cone

6ยฝโ€ณ Egyptian Papyrus cone midwoofer

Egyptian Papyrus is a cellulose-based natural material made from the pith of the Cyperus papyrus plant โ€” one of the oldest materials in human civilisation, chosen here because its acoustic properties are remarkable. High internal damping suppresses cone resonance modes without added moving mass. The fibrous cellular structure provides natural self-damping and the tonal warmth and organic midrange texture that define the R-Series character.

A free air resonance of 29 Hz gives the driver genuine bass authority within V&Y's reflex alignment. The neodymium motor is optimised for low distortion across the full excursion range. A vented cast aluminum chassis manages thermal loading. The Papyrus cone's natural tonal character is the acoustic complement to the beryllium tweeter's precision โ€” the reason the R-Series sounds the way it does.

Egyptian Papyrusโ„ข

Beryllium and Papyrus represent two entirely different approaches to diaphragm design โ€” one maximally rigid, one maximally damped. The R1 crossover is designed to let each material do exactly what it does best within its operating range. What the listener hears is not a beryllium tweeter and a Papyrus midwoofer. It is one coherent instrument.
Signal integration

The crossover is where the speaker is truly designed.

The R1 crossover integrates two transducers with different material characters, different sensitivity levels, and different directivity behaviours into a single coherent acoustic system. A precision attenuation network in the tweeter path maintains tonal balance and dynamic integrity across the transition region. LCR impedance linearisation presents a stable, amplifier-friendly load across the full frequency range. Resonance suppression networks at each driver's mechanical limit keep those modes out of the listening position. Phase-aligned integration at the ~2,500 Hz crossover point.

The network is built around the specific properties of the waveguide-loaded beryllium tweeter โ€” its controlled directivity, impedance curve, and sensitivity accounted for explicitly in every component value. The assembly uses premium polypropylene film capacitors and air-core inductors, matched as a stereo pair to better than 1% tolerance. The crossover is not a frequency divider. It is a translator between two acoustic worlds.
Cabinet design

Precision has a geometry.

The R1 cabinet is V&Y's own design โ€” built around the acoustic requirements of this specific driver pair. Internal geometry, baffle proportions, port architecture, and bracing layout are derived from the beryllium and Papyrus configuration. The result is a cabinet with a coherent point of view โ€” not a specification sheet with an enclosure around it.
Baffle

Diffraction-controlled baffle geometry

The baffle profile is shaped to suppress high-frequency edge diffraction โ€” the reflections from cabinet boundaries that broaden the acoustic image and introduce tonal coloration. Driver placement is calculated against the baffle geometry to displace diffraction artefacts outside the critical listening band. The waveguide-loaded beryllium tweeter controls directivity above the crossover point โ€” the cabinet geometry focuses on what the waveguide does not address.

Bass loading

Down-firing reflex alignment, 36.5 Hz

Down-firing bass reflex port, tuned to 36.5 Hz. The midwoofer's low free air resonance of 29 Hz and the reflex alignment together produce bass extension with the same organic character as the Papyrus midrange โ€” warm, textured, and tonally continuous with the frequencies above it. The down-firing orientation uses floor boundary reinforcement to extend bass loading and keeps turbulence noise away from the primary listening axis.

Internal geometry

Wedge rear walls, strategic bracing

Wedge-shaped inner rear walls reduce internal reflections within the cabinet volume. Strategic bracing positions suppress panel resonance modes across the operating band. High-density natural wood composite construction โ€” moisture-resistant and dimensionally stable, maintaining its acoustic geometry over decades of use.

Surface

Multi-stage hand-applied finish

Each cabinet passes through a controlled multi-stage coating process โ€” flat-sanded between coats, inspected under raking light, cleared only when it meets our written surface specification. The natural Papyrus cone creates a visual pairing with each cabinet finish that is specific to the R-Series and visible to anyone in the room. Available in all five V&Y finishes.

Amplifier pairing.

The R1 rewards a capable solid-state amplifier with stable current delivery into 4 ฮฉ loads. The beryllium tweeter's resolution and extension to 40 kHz means the R1 will reveal the character of the amplifier driving it โ€” which is a feature for listeners who have invested in a high-quality amplifier. Quality of amplifier matters more than quantity of power. Our team is available to advise on specific pairings before purchase.
System context

Stereo. Cinema. The R-Series voice throughout.

The R1 is designed as a primary stereo pair for two-channel listening and as the front left/right anchor of an R-Series cinema system. The beryllium tweeter's extension to 40 kHz and the Papyrus midwoofer's natural warmth produce a presentation that rewards long listening sessions โ€” open and extended in the treble, tonally rich in the midrange, with the resolution to surface detail without fatigue.

For cinema deployment, the R1 pairs with the R-Series centre channel, surround, and Atmos speakers โ€” all sharing the same beryllium tweeter and Papyrus character. The R1's tonal signature extends through every channel of the complete system. One voice. In every direction.
